Oct. 08 - Professional Development In GPIS

GPIS MYP and DP science staff had a successful two days training sessions in science by a member of the IBO faculty, Dr Geoffrey Neuss on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th Of October 2008.
The session tackled several issues:
o As building practical thinking.
o How to prepare students for exams.
o The new IA criteria for science and their implementation.
o The use of ICT in science teaching.
o Marking students’ practical write-ups to the correct standard.
o Developing a suitable practical scheme of work to fulfill all the new criteria.
o Encouraging critical thinking in science.
o A session to students on how to get full mark in lab reports.
Who is Dr Geoffrey Neuss?
Dr Geoffrey Neuss is:
o Head of Science at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, U.K. where he has taught HL and SL IB Diploma Chemistry and Theory of Knowledge for the past 26 years.
o An examiner for the IB for over twenty years and held the post of
o The Deputy Chief Examiner for six of these years.
o The Principal Examiner for Chemistry Extended Essays and is
o A member of the current team that writes the external examinations.
o One of the members heavily involved in the last three reviews of the chemistry programme for first examination in 1998, 2003 and 2009.
o The author of "Chemistry for the IB Diploma" and "The Chemistry Course Companion" both published by Oxford University Press.

He has run more than sixty workshops worldwide for IB teachers and currently trains future IB workshop leaders in addition to advising individual schools

8 Oct.08- GPIS contribution in the Annual IB Africa
|

|

IBO congratulated GPIS for the 2007 Robert Blackburn award in the Annual IB Africa, Europe, Middle East 2008 regional Conference in Marrakech.
Green Land Pré Vert International School participated in the annual regional conference of school heads and IB coordinators for IB schools in Africa, Europe and the Middle East that was held in Marrakech from 6 to 8 October 2008.In this conference over 700 members of IB schools Heads and Coordinators from 50 countries took part of this conference for three days of inspiration, collaboration, and reflection.
The conference theme was “Challenging the soul and inspiring the mind, inspiring the soul”
Every morning from 9h00 to 10h30, the conference members joined a plenary session “lecture” from a distinguished participant.
Keynote speakers names:
· Peter Dalglish,Founder of the board Member of the Board of Directors of Ashoka Canada,
· JoAnn Deak, advisor to Outward Bound, a past chair of the National Committee for Girls and Women in Independent Schools
· Kimmie Weeks,Executive Director of Youth Action International.
Before the plenary session of Wednesday 8th of October, Andrew BOLLINGTON IBO Regional Director, congratulated the school for this award infront of 700 IB world schools members.
Arch. Amr Mokhtar, GPIS Founder & Chairman made a ten minutes presentation about the polyclinic community & service project that won the IB Prestigious 2007 Robert Blackburn Award.
All Arab IB schools were very proud of GPIS accomplishment and they congratulated Mr. Mokhtar for the great project and expressed their will for collaboration between their schools and GPIS.

International Day of Peace
|
|
On the frame of the International day of Peace, the AOI team held a competition between all MYP & PPCS students. The students were asked to get articles, poems, quotes or pictures that are related to peace.
All the materials brought by the students were displayed on a board.
The MYP & PPCS teachers were invited to vote for what they liked most.
The 2 winners from MYP students received t-shirts with a large printed title “International Day of Peace”.

Sep.08- Session on Preservation of Ozone Layer

|

In the occasion of the International day of “Preservation of the Ozone layer”, the AOI Team organized awareness sessions on the problem, its impact on earth as well as the citizens’ roles towards such an issue.
Members from the AOI team designed and hanged advertisements and decoration to remind the MYP-PPCS students with the day and the sessions.
The students were divided into two groups according to their 1st language each group attended a session.
Mr. Essam El Din – DP & MYP Physics Teacher - held the session in English, while Mr. Alexandre – PPCS Physics and Chemistry Teacher - held the session in French.
The sessions took place Thursday 18th September from 12:40 to 1:25 pm.

May 2008 : Announcement of GPIS Scholarship competition

|

GPIS believes that taking care of the young children education is a crucial issue for any country’s future.
For that reason, on year 2000, GPIS started offering scholarships for the best talented, remarkable & successful students in Egypt. This successful step was followed by another one on year 2005 where GPIS presented 24 academic renewable scholarships to distinctive Egyptian students. Heading for the same aim on year 2008, GPIS offered to BEST students in Egypt its third Scholarship competition.

23 April 2008: Coran Competition
|
|
 Like every year GPIS organized a Coran Competition. Each student had to Choose a quarter from the Holy Coran that has a link with at least one of the sciences known nowadays (Medicine, astronomy, Wind, Seas, Biology…etc.), memorize the Quarter with the correct reading rules and analyze it. Several prizes were distributed for the winners.

It’s an annual competition, in which all MYP-PPCS4 students have to participate in it, it's optional for all MYP students. Each student has to:
1- Choose a quarter from the Holy Quran that has a link with at least one of the sciences known nowadays (Medicine, astronomy, Wind, Seas, Biology…etc.).
2- Memorize the Quarter with the correct reading rules
3- Search in a large variety of resources for
• Meaning
• Grammar
• The purpose
• The relation with nowadays science
4- Analyze the Quarter, it means Count how many Times “ALLAH” was mentioned & the names of Allah, how many calls for “Alazina Amanou” and what were the calls about.
5- Sort the versus of the Quarter in 3 types: 3akida, Kasas & Orders.
6- Write a Reflection, which was the most important part of the project, in which they included:
• What they learned from such a research
• The skills they developed throughout this project
• Its impact on their Profile and the new things they will do to apply what they learned in this project.
• How it will help them & guide them on the Path of ALLAH “Alserat AlMostakim”.
In this competition the students had to refer to a large number of resources, they had to use the correct way of citation & they had to present 2 printed copies of their researches as well as a soft copy saved on a CD. In order to participate in such a project, each student chooses a supervisor to guide him/her and answer any questions.
The competition was held on 3 levels as follows:
1- Golden (1) for MYP-PPCS4 students
2- Golden (2) for younger students
3- Silver for some of the MYP-PPCS4 students who find real difficulties in the 4th point mentioned above.
The students started working for this competition since the beginning of the school year (September), they presented their final copies in March. Then the assessment stage started, the supervisors assessed the projects according to specific descriptors (distributed on the students since September). The 2 or 3 students – from Golden & Silver levels - who got the highest grades were then asked to present their researches in front of a jury to determine the final winner. The Jury included participants from the school as well as outsiders. The Jury announced the winner in each level & the Chairman Arch. Amr Mokhtar Distributed the Prizes to winners.
The Prizes are:
- 1000 L.E. For best Project in Golden level (1) [Students from Myp-PPCS4 =3rd Preparatory]
- 750 L.E For Best Project in Golden Level (2) [Students younger than MYP-PPCS4]
- 500 L.E For Best Project in Silver Level.
All students who participated in the final round received an Honor Certificate as well as 200 L.E for the students who didn’t win the final prizes.
